"As the founding member of the Museum, Arts, and Cultural Enhancement Committee, I’m proud to have played a key role in shaping a space where arts and culture are not just appreciated—but funded, protected, and uplifted.
Over the past seven years, I have worked to raise awareness among legislators about the importance of the arts. I’ve demonstrated to both young students and older adults that museums and the arts are economic engines in our society. Now, as a committed member of the newly renamed Museum, Arts, Culture, and Entertainment Committee, we are continuing the work to ensure that state dollars reach local projects and creative institutions that make our communities vibrant and whole.
Through this work, I have:
Helped secure millions of dollars in funding for arts and cultural projects across Illinois through the Illinois Arts Council
Supported the development of the African American History Teaching Museum, ensuring Black American stories are told and preserved
Championed investments in the Kehrein Center for the Arts, a vital space for youth expression and neighborhood engagement in the Austin community
Served as Chief Co-Sponsor in the 100th General Assembly for the creation of Cultural Districts, recognizing the importance of celebrating place, heritage, and community identity
Encouraged and supported the Soul City Corridor Cultural District application along Chicago Avenue, affirming its importance as a hub for Black-owned businesses and cultural expression on Chicago’s West Side
...to name just a few.
The arts are not a luxury—they are a foundation for community healing, identity, and growth. I remain committed to supporting legislation and initiatives that invest in our cultural infrastructure and expand access to the arts for all Illinoisans."
